Bocce Challenge 2011

Before a standing room only crowd at the Eagle Heights Sports Complex, Special Olympics Ontario, London athletes engaged in spirited bocce competition from a hand-picked, carefully assembled squad of some of London’s finest available volunteers. Fans from as far away as St. Thomas made the journey to enjoy bocce competition at its finest. It was clear that the SOOL volunteer teams were in tough against a home crowd that favoured the Special Olympic athletes. The officials comprised of Mike Clark, Ted Christie and John DiCicco were hard-pressed to keep control as competition was intense. Hats off to SOOL Bocce coaches Shannon Toshack, Mario Mastropasqua and Katie Elliott. Despite their best efforts of the SOOL volunteers, the athletes carried the night with the most wins. It was clear that athlete training and conditioning became a factor as the SOOL volunteers were trying to play catch-up near the end of the evening. With true sportsmanship, everyone shook hands and applauded the efforts of all participants along with a challenge to the volunteers to return again later in the season.
