Minutes of the Tri-Regional Workshop (Regions 1, 2 & 4) for Spring Winter
Sports.
Saturday September 22, 2001
from 9.30 am to 3.30 p.m.

1. Welcome / Introductions - (morning coffee, tea and juice and muffins were provided)
2. Overview of the day.
3. Provincial and Regional updates.
Brad Kane gave a provincial update with handouts on fundraising update, curling news update, Making it Happen 2001brochure 2002 coaching courses, Coach Education 20/20 initiative and the floor hockey conference play down structure.
Bill Mates gave a Region update reviewing the past CDC summit, the Region 2 RCMT team and summary of the September 8th RCMT one day conference. The RCMT team met September 19th to outline a strategic plan for the coming year. The RCMT Volunteer Team consists of Ed McLachlan Region 2 Coordinator, Pearl Alles Region 2 Treasurer, Grace and Paul Wilson Summer sports, Ingrid Newbery Spring sports and Dennis Bordin winter sports.
It was noted that Region 2 has one of the strongest growth areas with 20 Community Councils with 1616 athletes, 134 sport clubs and 622 volunteers. Bill briefly reviewed the Region 2 - Regional Work Plan dated September 2001 and the Region 2 Program Development Goals July 2001 to December 2002. Bill (on behalf of the staff in attendance) thanked all the volunteers and coaches for all of their tireless work in making OSO a great organization to belong to. A kind reminder to everyone about registration forms and up to date police checks etc. to be sent directly to Jennifer Bentley at the Provincial Office.
Winter and Spring sport verification lists were handed out along with instructions on how to complete fall verification. If you have any questions about this please contact Jennifer Bentley at the Provincial Office.
Please note that the Region 2 Christmas Banquet Gathering will take place in London Thursday December 6, 2001. Special Olympics London will be our hosts and more details are to come. Cost will be $15.00 per head. Thanks to our colleagues from Stratford last year who hosted - we all had a great time. In recognition of the International Year of the Volunteer service recognition will be made at the Dec 6th banquet. Please contact Ruth Ann Mills at 673-1130 by November 30, 2001.
4. Community Co-coordinates meeting (open to everyone).
Future meetings for Region 2 will be:
? Friday October 12 Guelph Special Olympics 20th Anniversary details to
follow.
? Monday November 05, 2001 Region 2 meeting - Woodstock.
? December Thursday December 6th - Region 2 Christmas Party / Social to
be hosted by Special Olympics London hotel reservations will be made by the
hosts if you plan to stay overnight. This night will include a section for recognizing
volunteers throughout Region 2.
? Monday February 11, 2002 Region 2 meeting Woodstock.
? Saturday April 13, 2002 Tri-Regional Summer Sports OSTAT workshop also
Community Coordinators will meet as a group location K-W 9.30 am to 4.30
pm.
? Monday June 03, 2002 Region 2 meeting Woodstock planning meeting for 2002
/ 2003.
General discussion took place with the actions items being the following:
? A softball coaches meeting will be held Tuesday October 30th in Woodstock
to put place a plan for next summer in terms of hosting quality competitions.
? A decision was made to recognize Jeanette Martin and Denise Tanquay at the
Christmas banquet as they are both retiring from Region 2 SO.
? It was agreed that Brad would send through to Bill the results of who the
communities were that sent athletes to the last 5 OSO Celebrity Festival. The
remaining communities would be put into a hat and a community would be picked
to send an athlete. (This was done around October 01st and Woodstock was chosen).
? It was decided that the Hosting a Competition booklet needed revising.
Catherine MacKinnon from Central Bruce and Bill Mates would work on this. An
existing booklet would be sent to Catherine and Bill top review. Revisions would
be presented at future Region meetings for input.
? Bill and Brad would contact Ian to see about the possibility of putting together
a booklet with all 16 sports rules and regulations for easy access.
? A note will be emailed out to all area clubs notifying everyone of the changes
going on in the K-W area. This also included a note about the new special needs
sports club being established in K-W that are not part of SO. It was noted that
SO clubs will NOT compete with this new group as they are not part of the SO
organization.
5. Breakout into groups by sports - each group to have a facilitator
and a recorder (2 hours 30 minutes)
Sports are 5 pin bowling, 10 pin bowling, swimming, powerlifting, floor hockey,
alpine skiing, snowshoeing, figure skating, nordic skiing and speed skating.
Also basketball and curling.
6. Summary, comments and wrap up - door prizes etc.
Thanks Brad for all the door prizes and also to Region 2 for the last few door prizes.
It was recommended that this type of workshop is beneficial and should continue twice a year.
